Lightening the Load: Luyt Junk Removal

Featuring: Aaron Luyt, Luyt Junk Removal Ltd.

“I really love business ownership and I love the small community that I’m in. I love having a business where I can connect with people and help people out.”

A South Delta business he recommends: CoastLife Strength & Conditioning

We all have that friend with the truck, the one we call from the IKEA parking lot with our new cabinet propped against the bumper of an SUV that is not, in fact, the home-improvement version of Mary Poppins’ magic carpet bag (even if the back seats do fold down completely flat). Aaron Luyt is that friend for the entire community of South Delta, and beyond. Originally from Ontario, he moved to BC in 2006 and made his way to the small community of Ladner in 2020. He recently started Luyt Junk Removal with fifteen years in the trucking and disposal industry under his belt, after supervising a fleet of trucks led to owning one and then several. With experience as a mover as well, Aaron recognizes that emotional clutter often goes hand in hand with cluttered spaces. His passion for business and helping folks in need unearthed Luyt Junk Removal Ltd. from the depths of garage cleanouts and commercial site cleanups. He’s been on the receiving end of that IKEA-parking-lot-call, the gotta-get-rid-of-this-mattress call and many others enough times to know that anyone, anywhere, might one day have the need for a bigger truck and a helping hand.

What inspired you to start Luyt Junk Removal?

I’ve worked in the disposal industry for 15 years now, and I love entrepreneurship and building things. I started out when I was younger and got into supervising a fleet, and now I own a fleet of trucks and was looking to transfer some of my experience and skills to another startup. I really love business ownership and I love the small community that I’m in. I love having a business where I can connect with people and help people out, making some money and doing something I have experience in at the same time. Over the years, I often found myself with a truck helping people, so I thought I’d give this a shot and see where it goes. I started out here in my community but have extended to other nearby communities, too. For example, I have a part-time crew on call in the Abbotsford/Mission area, although I’m mostly sticking to local South Delta work for now.

What can a client expect service-wise from Luyt Junk Removal?

Any and all junk removal services, really. We have access to different sizes of trucks and different capacities, so we have the ability for small, medium, or big jobs in both residential and commercial spaces. We can pick up appliances, do yard waste removal, garage cleanouts, and commercial site cleanups. We do residential estate cleanouts, like if someone’s passed or foreclosed and there’s a lot left in the house that needs to be removed. So yeah, anytime someone needs to get rid of something, we can figure out a way to do that for them.

What does being eco-friendly mean for your and your company?

When I load up on a job, I might have a mixture of cardboard, metal, wood and maybe some electronics on top of that. What some services will do when they pick up that kind of job is just dump it all in one go at the landfill. But the Vancouver Landfill is really well set up, so, when I go, I individually separate the different materials I’ve picked up and make sure it all ends up where it can be recycled or reused. Styrofoam is separated from cardboard, cardboard is separated from wood, garbage goes into the regular garbage, metal goes into the metal container, wood has its own special spot. It takes more time, but that’s the only way to make sure everything is recycled properly. And then there’s goodwill, too, and batteries and things that need to go to the Return-It depot. We offer those recycling and donation services to our clients so they know their stuff is being separated with care and not just dumped into the landfill.

What keeps you inspired or committed to your business or industry?

Cluttered garages and houses, things like that can really stress people out. It can also be pretty emotional for them, like if they’re taking care of everything after a parent passes away. Quite often, the services we provide really help people out. Decluttering a physical space that’s causing stress helps them with their emotional state. A lot of times, it’s very relieving for them to have that space cleared. It’s about more than just the work or the money for me. Every time I’ve connected with someone who books our services, I come away inspired by how much lighter they feel after we clear out whatever they need taken away. It’s a good feeling.

What’s your favourite part of living and working in South Delta?

The small community aspect of knowing everyone that does anything. I love running into the same people at the grocery store all the time, or seeing familiar faces from all walks of life at my gym in Ladner. In a small community, you get to know the people you see at daycare, or your kids’ baseball and sports games. Community connectedness is really important for me and my family, and such an awesome way of knowing people.
